Autopsy Pathology

Autopsy Pathology encompasses the study of disease processes that result in death. For the resident, the hopsital autopsy involves verifying autopsy consent forms, understanding the rules and regulations governing post-mortem examination, collecting clinical data through interaction with clinicians and the patient medical record, gross external and internal examination of the deceased, preparation of PAD, CLINICAL SUMMARY, and GROSS DESCRIPTION, microscopic examination of sections taken from diseased organs, and preparation of MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION, FAD, and CLINICO-PATHOLOGIC CORRELATION.


Cytology

Cytology is the study of cells. By microscopic examination of cells exfoliated, scraped from surfaces or aspirated from tissue the Cytology Department is able to diagnose benign, pre-malignant and malignant conditions. Material can be obtained from any organ or body site by natural voiding (eg urine or sputum), aspiration (eg pleural fluid, breast lumps) or surface scraping/brushing (eg cervical smears/endoscopic brushings) and examined microscopically.


Electron Microscopy

This course provides a basic framework in ultrastructural pathology. It includes learning objectives in renal pathology, muscle pathology and nerve pathology as well as applications of electron microscopy to tumors and pediatric diagnosis.
