Blood Bank

This course provides a basic framework in Transfusion Medicine. It includes immunohematology, component therapy, adverse effects of transfusion, blood and stem cell donor evaluation and management, and apheresis.


Chemistry

Clinical Chemistry is a complex study containing a number of subspecialities. In addition to Clinical Chemistry, the rotation includes studies in Endocrinology, Therapeutic drug monitoring, Serum tumor markers, Fetal defect markers, Emergency toxicology, Blood gas analysis, and Drug of abuse screening. In addition to these areas, the impact of local and federal legislation, quality control and quality improvement, laboratory management, finances and billing, workflow, and automated instrumentation, are included in the four-month rotation.


Cytogenetics

The cytogenetic quiz is designed to test a Residents knowledge in Clinical, Cancer and Molecular Cytogenetics.


Hematology

Attending: Jacob Rand

All residents rotate through the Hematology Laboratory during the Clinical Pathology segment of their training. This includes rotating through the Core Hematology, Special Coagulation and Protein Separation Labs. The residents prepare cases requiring interpretation for daily sign-out with the laboratory director. All residents are expected to complete 2 projects - one scholarly project, and a second one involving an aspect of laboratory improvement, during the course of their rotations.


Microbiology

This test is designed to test a resident's medical and technical knowledge to determine if they are competent to advise and assist other professionals in the microbiologic procedures and diagnostic techniques which will lead to assistance in the diagnosis of an infectiouse disease. This test should be taken at the start of the laboratory rotation, at the end of the laboratory rotation and again at the end of their clinical Infectious Disease rotation.


Molecular Pathology

The Molecular Pathology rotation is designed to provide the Pathology resident with the basic knowledge of the principles of molecular biology and applications of molecular biology techniques to clinical laboratory testing.?


Point of Care

Attending: Amy Fox

Residents are introduced to the POC program and the Supervisory personnel by Dr. Amy Fox, the Director. Residents attend site visits with the POC team which include the Medical group, school based health and In-house sites including ICU,CCU,cardiac cath lab etc. Residents will gain proficiency in Provider performed Micrcroscopy and other areas that require physician certification. In addition residents are expected to become proficent in areas of regulatory compliance and to attend weekly POC team meetings wher review of sites as well as possible new equipment is discussed for posssible use within the Medical center.


Virology

The Virology Laboratory at MontefioreMedicalCenter provides testing for viral diseases, including HIV, utilizing various methodologies and state-of-the-art technology.? It is one of the few hospital based virology laboratories that retains a tissue culture facility for primary virus isolation and serves as a reference lab for the WHO and the CDC.
While on the Virology rotation, residents will become familiarized with all aspects of viral serology, PCR and virus isolation.? At the end of their rotation they will take a quiz to assure their proficiency with basic principals.
